>> it makes me feel good. >> reporter: just 24 hours earlier, jimenez was crying for a different reason. she was walking to her apartment with her two, young boys, when police say a 14-year-old boy pulled out a gun and pointed it at the mother of two. police say the gun was actually a fake. but to jimenez, it looked real. >> and he put the gun to my face and said, give me your purse or i'm going to shoot you. and i just told him, please don't do this in front of my kids. and i gave him my purse. and he ran away. >> reporter: jimenez put her boys behind her to shield them from the robber. >> i didn't want him to hurt my kids. please, don't do nothing to my kids. >> reporter: the thief got away with $27 in the purse. but was caught an hour later. >> it really got to us that kids were involved. >> reporter: it struck a chord with him. >> we do this job to help people out. and she's a prime example of a

victim that needed help. we all got together and we made it happen. >> reporter: jimenez got her purse back, minus the money that was inside. the target department store hearing her story, donated a $100 gift card. the police gave toys, t-shirts and other gift cards. >> we were fine. we were safe. thank god he didn't do nothing to us. >> reporter: now, san jose has had more than 50 robberies in the first 2 months of this year. this includes businesses as well as person-to-person. we're live in san jose tonight. >> thank you, george. new video just into our newsroom tonight. investigators are hoping these images provide clues as to whereabouts of an east bay couple that vanished in peru. surveillance cameras show garrity and jamie at a bus station in lima. this may be the last-known images of the pair. hand and neal embarked on a trip

million. nbc's terry mcsweeney is live in emeryville tonight with more. >> reporter: you can talk about $85 billion in cuts. for thousands of people in the bay area, it comes down to $4.25. that's the cost of the average meal for the clients of meals on wheels. their story is, if they don't get that meal, they do without. their story is the story of don atkins of union city. >> it gets tougher when you get old er, believe me. things happen to you. you know? if you didn't expect. >> reporter: that is the truth for 79-year-old don atkins of union city. he didn't expect his wife to die, his business to go under. his nutrition to be dependent on meals on wheels. >> without the extra vitamins and the health that those meals give you, and a good, balanced

meal, you're able to fight the disease off. that's my understanding. and the doctor agrees with that. and i do, too. >> reporter: but if the federal spending cuts kick in, meals on wheels will be kicked in the gut. the organization that provides meals to home-bound, isolated elders could lose a chunk of its budget. it would mean the loss of $100,000 per year or 282 meals per day. there could be layoffs. >> really, what we have is professional staff, client care staff. and nutrition staff, who make sure the meals are wholesome and nutritious and safe. >> reporter: another money-saving option, is the unthinkable. turning away elders in need of a meal. >> it's a heart breaker. >> reporter: don would miss the

daily visit of the volunteers. >> one's an oakland a's fans. so forth and so on. >> reporter: i asked don, what if it happens and meals on wheels stops? >> it have to survive somehow. at least i'm still eating. but just not as much. i don't know what that will do to me. >> reporter: the folks at meals on wheels says, there's two things you can do about this. you can go on meals on wheels website and make a contribution. or call your congressional representative and tell them to do something about this. a lot of people who clients on meals on wheels, would make that phone call, but they can't afford a phone. live in emeryville, terry mcsweeney. >> thank you. tonight, the coast guard is searching the waters and asking for the public's help in identifying the family who made this may day call. >> coast guard, coast guard. we are abandoning ship. this is the charm blower. we are abandoning ship.

>> the coast guard are searching for a husband, wife and two young children believed to be on a sailboat. they were about 65 miles off of monterey, when they reported that the boat was taking on water. >> we believe they have life jackets and not much other safety equipment. they were trying to fashion a life raft out of coolers and other objects on the sailboat. >> a series of calls began around 4:00 p.m. the ast guard, amy and national guard have joined the search today. there's no sign of the boat or the family. it's a question posed around the world. who will be the next leader of the catholic church? tonight, 11 u.s. cardinals are preparing to answer them. among them, the former archbishop of san francisco. today, he addressed the controversy surrounding another california cardinal, roger mahoney, and calls him for not to participate in the papal conclave.

church maloney participated in a cover-up for priests who sexually abused children. >> he's the first to have said and apologized for theeres in judgment he made when they were first coming before him. >> tim lenin was raped and accused by his parish priest. he doesn't think mahoney deserves to select the next pope. >> those kind of officials, no matter what institution, should not be part of the process of any decision of the hierarchy. >> despite the outcry, cardinal maloney left for rome saturday. cardinal le vada leaves for tomorrow. a bald eagle, on a joyride, from palo alto to redwood city. the joyride is over tonight. jean elle joins us in palo alto, where the eagle has landed.

jean? >> reporter: it has landed safely. the eagle is safe here,al the palo alto junior museum and zoo, after several days of free flying. her trainer tempted her with some food. and she landed tonight in redwood city. >> she took off on saturday afternoon, midway through the flight. she had half of her dinner. and headed north. and kept heading north and heading north. >> reporter: john aiken knows where this bald eagle went over the last three days. because a transmitter in her tail pinpointed her location. and he followed her from palo alto to east palo alto, menlo park and redwood city. aiken is like a proud parent. the pair first med at the san francisco zoo. and now, work together at the palo alto junior museum and zoo. she usually responds to his calls and food. but every three years or so, she leaves aiken on a dangerous adventure. >> power lines.

there's trucks and cars. and people that are unpredictable. >> reporter: she has a tail injury from a gunshot wound. she doesn't hunt, but loves to spread her wings. aiken says he has no plans to ground her. >> i don't want this to stop. she gets too much joy out of it. so do we. i don't think it's going to happen all that often. it happens maybe every three years. >> reporter: now, sequoia is supposed to fly free on thursday. but he may postpone that flight, just to be on the safe side. 35 different charges in northern california officer facing accusations that he was pulling women over and sexually assaulting them. >> he's accused of kidnapping, raping or assaulting several women. how they caught him and why there could be more victims out there. police changing tactics in the search to find a man accused

new at 11:00, a west sacramento police officer may have had his own stop and frisk plan. tonight, he's accused of using his position to assault women. richard sharp joins us live from san francisco with the latest on this investigation. >> he worked for the department for five years, according to the

chief. this was his first law enforcement job. a short career that came to an end today when he was arrested. for almost a year, the west sacramento police department says one of their own, sergio alvare alvarez, kidnapped, raped or asaultded six women. >> i'm sickened that someone put in a position of trust would violate that trust. in such an egregious and despicable manner. >> reporter: all of the victims were picked up on west capital avenue. he did all of this, on duty, in uniform and in his patrol car. we talked to this woman. we're not showing her face because she knows officer alvarez by name and is not surprised at his arrest. >> it's very serious to me because of the ladies he -- >> reporter: there were six victims. do you think there's going to be more? >> there were about 16.

>> reporter: alvarez was arrested on about 35 different charges. his bail set at $26.3 million. >> officer alvarez was terminated. served termination paperwork. >> reporter: the arrest has stunned neighbors who used to live next door to him. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: alvarez, used to rent a home from this woman, who paints a different picture of the arrested officer. >> he was very nice. he was a good guy. really sweet. >> reporter: now, the west sacramento police department is in the long process of rebuilding their image and reviewing their policies, to see if major changes are needed. >> i'll be doing everything we can to assure that this won't occur again. >> reporter: now, the chief says that this came to their attention when another one of their officers was contacted by one of the alleged victims. that was in september. the next day, officer alvarez was placed on paid administrative leave. the search continues. and police are using a new tool

to track down the prime suspect in that las vegas shooting last week. three people died, including an oakland rapper. police say the manhunt for 26-year-old ammar harris will be the posted on billboards across southern nevada, this picture here among them. they're widening their search to include the southeast, where he once lived. harris was driving a black range rover last thursday on the las vegas strip when he shot at oakland rapper, kenny cherry. after being shot, cherry's car crashed into a taxi that exploded. police found harris' range rover a few blocks away on saturday. it's bad and getting worse. but san jose is working on a plan to fix bad roads. part of the plan includes you footing the bill. a quart e of the roadways are in poor condition. and by 2020, every road will be that way. how to fix it? ooh tax. a half-cent sales increase. or a bond measure.

breaking news to share with you. in egypt right now, a hot air balloon crash has reportedly killed 19 tourists. french and british tourists are among the dead. an egyptian security official says there was a fire and an explosion. and the balloon plunged from the sky near luxor. of course, we'll bring you more information on this story as it becomes available. back with sports in a moment.

dozens of pieces found by an expedition team. this was a couple of weeks ago. that meteorite fell to earth on february 15th, the exact day. leaving behind a trail of smoke as it streaked through the atmosphere. locals say the meteorite fell into a lake, leaving a 20-foot hole in the ice. no space rock found online for sale is the real deal. you have a lot of people putting on rock online for hundreds of dollars, and so forth. that's fake. let's turn things over to jeff. >> you should keep your eyes to the sky and see some kind of meteorite in the sky. it happens all the time. we're going to have clear conditions. temperatures in the mid to upper 30s for the east bay and north bay. so, a cold start. by the afternoon, sunny skies, upper 60s. if you suffer from allergies, not a good day. some of the warmest weather of
